Adopting trauma informed practices is a newer standard of operating that many therapists and coaches have begun employing. Being trauma informed allows a coach to recognize the prevalence of past personal trauma in the present-day lives of the people they serve. By acknowledging and understanding the role that trauma (whether it be of large or small scale) continues to play in our current experience, we are able to better understand why it is that we currently think, act, and feel the way that we do. By starting from this place of understanding, we are able to access deeper layers of healing so that we can let go of patterns of thinking and behavior that are getting in the way of us accessing the lives and experiences that we desire to have.
Trauma Informed Coaching is the practice of understanding the presence of past trauma in a client’s present-day experience. A trauma-informed coach will use this understanding as a guide for healing and break-through in the client's present-day life.
Trauma-informed care means shifting from the medical question of “What’s wrong with you?” to the trauma-informed question of “What has happened to you that has effected how you currently act, think, and feel in your life?"
The Master Coaching Certification simply means that over 200 hours of coaching were completed in the coach's certification process.
Life coaching is a synergistic relationship between coach and a client designed to tap into a person's full potential. While therapists operate under a medical model of care, coaches operate under a support model. Similar to therapists, each coach has his or her area(s) of specialty or expertise and may have certain techniques or approaches that they feel are the most effective in creating the best results for their clients. Additionally, therapists are usually anchored in a top-down approach (placing the primary focus on cognition, thoughts and the mind), whereas a trauma-informed coach who also utilizes somatic (body-based) techniques places more importance on a bottom-up approach (employing body-based interventions which emphasize brain-body connection). In other words, a trauma-informed coach will place as much emphasis on what you are FEELING and EXPERIENCING in your body as they do on what you are thinking in your mind and expressing verbally.
Trauma Informed Coaches often focus on specific modalities and have very focused areas of training. As a coach who specializes in developmental trauma, parts work, inner child exploration, and somatic experiencing, my approach is one that dives deeply into how your body reacts to the world you live in. I utilize body-based approaches to empower my clients to heal from wounds that have often been present in their bodies for many years and to unravel the beliefs that my clients have internalized about themselves based on the traumas that they experienced. By healing the body from the trauma responses, it liberates the client to let go of the limiting beliefs that have been holding them back from stepping into the lives that they desire. Doing this work also empowers clients to rewire their neural pathways and muscle memories so that they are able to feel safe and calm in situations that may have been triggering or scary in the past. Ultimately clients are able to retrain themselves to feel safe in the world and to make decisions from a place of personal autonomy rather than from a place of fear and reaction.
The length of a coaching package will depend on your personal needs as well as what you are currently working through, however the shortest commitment I recommend is 3 months as, in my experience, this is amount of time that is needed to start seeing a shift.
All coaching sessions are client led which means that we will work in the session with whatever you bring on any given day. You are the content. There is no pre set agenda. So we are able to move things as they come up in real time. So one session I may decide to take you on an inner child journey and the next session we may do emotional release work or neuro-linguistic programming. It all depends on what I feel will serve you the best in that particular session with what you are currently navigating. I rely heavily on my intuition in my coaching to guide us in the most powerful direction for you to heal what is most present and potent for you in that moment.
